Poultry

Senegal

Automation

In Dakar, the country’s capital, Sedima operates a high-capacity poultry processing facility that can process 100 birds per minute. Founded in 1976, the factory is now equipped from end to end with Marel software automation solutions encompassing live bird handling, stunning, scalding, defeathering, evisceration, water chilling, and grading. Says Mme Anta Babacar Ngom, General Manager at Sedima, “We are changing the way of thinking about poultry processing in West Africa.”

Belgium

Automation

Belki, a family-owned poultry processor based in Aalst, is a leading poultry processing company with specialty breed offerings for its region. It recently deployed Marel software to monitor grading in the control room and connect to three bulk weighing stations. Says Steven Jespers, General Manager, “People have been willing to pay for these products for over 30 years.”

Poland

Production control

Cedrob, one of the country’s most important poultry processors, adopted Marel software to monitor performance, availability, and quality from end to end in two of its plants. With these tools, the company can identify production losses, line maintenance issues, and quality anomalies. Says Robert Duda, Application and Maintenance Manager at Cedrob, “A reduction in losses means more profit for us and a better return on our investment.”

Fish

Iceland

Traceability

Einhamar Seafood produces fresh cod and haddock fillets for same-day air freight export. The company deployed Marel software on iPads to monitor processing, plan production, inform order fulfillment, and collect traceability data. Says Alda Gylfadóttir, Managing Director of Einhamar Seafood, “Being able to present full traceability for our products strengthens the trust between us and our customers.”

Norway

Employee satisfaction

Located in southwest Norway, Marine Harvest Ryfisk wanted to improve its plant’s efficiency and increase throughput without changing its crew. With production control and quality assurance software, the company increased capacity by 40 percent. “[Our employees] were a little skeptical to begin with, but now they are very satisfied,” says Odd Fosså, Production Manager at Marine Harvest Ryfisk. “The challenges that have come up have been solved to our satisfaction and Marel made sure that the necessary resources were available and in place at our facility when we needed them.”

Meat

United States

Traceability

Kuna FoodService, founded in 1918 in St. Louis, Missouri, is the largest privately owned steak processor in the area. By implementing Marel software, the company improved yields, enhanced profits, and realized higher quality. “We have traceability of what goods were used to cut each individual steak,” says Dan Fernandez, Meat Unit Production Manager at Kuna FoodService. “If the USDA has a recall from a specific supplier, I would be able to, instead of throwing out a whole bunch from that day, narrow the recall down to the exact cases, or to the exact sub primal. This of course gives me tremendous peace of mind.”

Ireland

Operational value

Moy Park is a large processing concern with multiple plants in different countries. It wanted centralized, up-to-the-minute information with integrated systems. It adopted software for automated line control, quality control, and reporting. By digitalizing management processes over multiple sites, the company maximized operational efficiency. “We have been able to reduce the number of these systems by some 80 percent over four years, “ says David Anderson, Director of IS and Business Solutions at Moy Park. “Our ultimate ideal is to have a single operational system reporting to a single ERP system.”
